Noli foras ire, in te ipsum redi, in interiore homine habitat veritas

– St. Augustine.

“Don’t search outside, but look inside yourself. For in the inner self dwells truth.”

Recede in te ipsum (Know thyself) comes from the Ancient Greek γνῶθι σαυτόν (gnothi sauton), and it is found in the Temple of Apollo at Delfi. It has been largely used in the Latin literature, symbolising the return to one’s self; a moment of inner dialogue and self-reflection.
